There are many ways in which you can prepare for freezing temperatures, possible snow, sleet and freezing rain.

Learn more about winter storms and how to prepare for them on NOAA’s National Weather Service website.

REMEMBER: If YOU are prepared, the weather predictions aren’t so important!

The Emergency Alert System test plays a key role in ensuring the nation is prepared for any type of hazard, and that the U.S. public can receive critical and vital information should it ever be needed. Make sure that you and your family receive the test warning and that everyone knows what to do if you received a true warning message. This is a great time to update your emergency plans for your community, family, business, facility and/or organization.

Key facts to note about the test:

It will be conducted Wednesday, November 9 at 2:00 PM EST and will last approximately 30 seconds.

It will be transmitted via television and radio stations within the U.S., including Alaska, Hawaii, the territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.

Similar to local emergency alert system tests, an audio message will interrupt television and radio programming indicating: “This is a test.”

When the test is over, regular programming will resume.

What are emergency responders doing when tornadoes hit Forsyth County? View this documentary of a county-wide disaster drill.

On April 30th, 2011, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Emergency Management conducted a county-wide disaster exercise (drill) that involved emergency response agencies and organizations across the county. Simulated injuries were applied to volunteers with make-up (moulage) to produce a more realistic scene for emergency responders.

The City of Winston-Salem Marketing and Communications Department created a documentary of the day’s events.

Hurricane Irene can't keep NC down! Goodbye Irene!

North Carolina is picking up the pieces from the brutal assualt of Hurricane Irene. Power is being restored and many shelters are closing. Although the storm surge on the beaches has receeded, several rivers in Eastern NC are still at flood stage. Unfortunately, there were 6 deaths in NC due to storm-related incidents; most of those were caused by fallen trees. Local, state and federal partners and volunteer organizations are working hard to restore utilities, infrastructure and normalcy to North Carolina.

Due to planning and foresight, many states along the Eastern Seaboard heeded the warnings and evacuated people from flood-prone areas in Hurricane Irene’s path, likely saving countless lives.
