Hurricane Floyd’s Fury

Learn more about how Hurricane Floyd unleashed its fury in 1999. Floyd was a North Carolina disaster that took 57 lives and caused major property and environmental damage. Sixty-six counties in North Carolina, including Forsyth County, were declared disaster areas.

Other statistics:

  • Only 14% of flood victims carried Flood Insurance
  • 12,000 small businesses reported economic damages
  • There were more than 1000 swift-water rescues and more than 1500 search & rescue missions
  • 220 caskets floated to the surface of flood waters
  • Princeville was practically swallowed up by the Tar River
  • Most deaths occurred in vehicles as flood victims attempted to navigate flood waters 
  • 235 shelters were opened for evacuees
  • Hazardous materials, such as pesticides, fuels, and animal waste from local farms, coated the flooded landscape
  • In the end….an estimated $6 billion in damages
