28 Tornadoes Caused Destruction & Fatalities in NC on April 16th

TWENTY-EIGHT tornadoes cut paths across North Carolina on Saturday, April 16th, 2011. This number exceeds the number of tornadoes that caused destruction across the state in 1984 (click here for a summary on the 1984 event).

This makes this event the largest tornado outbreak in our state’s history with respect to shear number of tornadoes as well as the number of counties effected.

National Weather Service Tornado Stats – April 19, 2011 …..This report only indicates 26 tornadoes. The Morehead City NWS office identified 2 new tornado touchdowns, one near Bath in Beaufort County and a second near Faison in Duplin County. These tornadoes are included on the map below.
