With tornadoes already ripping across portions of the south, severe storms producing damaging winds and tornadoes are possible in NC this evening and tonight. Here is the latest from our Hazardous Weather Outlook.

There is the potential for widespread damaging winds which can be as damaging as tornadoes, as well as tornadoes. The timing of the event is also dangerous with the severe storms coming through tonight. According to forecasters “LATEST MODEL GUIDANCE CONTINUES TO SHOW THE NECESSARY INGREDIENTS FOR A SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER EPISODE COMING TOGETHER ACROSS CENTRAL NC THIS EVENING/TONIGHT.”

Hazardous Weather Outlook…

THERE IS A RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THIS EVENING THROUGH TONIGHT. A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING…AND THROUGH CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA AFTER MIDNIGHT. A LINE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE COLD FRONT AS IT CROSSES THE AREA. ANY STORMS THAT DEVELOP ALONG THE FRONT WILL HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE DAMAGING WINDS…AND ISOLATED TORNADOES. A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT. ANY STORMS THAT DEVELOP IN ADVANCE OF THE FRONT WILL HAVE A HIGHER POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT APPEARS GREATEST BETWEEN 600 PM THIS EVENING AND 200 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING IN THE WESTERN PIEDMONT…

AND BETWEEN 1000 PM THIS EVENING AND 600 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING ALONG AND EAST OF THE TRIANGLE.

TORNADOES AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS PORTIONS OF CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA LATE THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT. NIGHTTIME TORNADOES ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. OVER EIGHTY PERCENT OF ALL TORNADO DEATHS IN NORTH CAROLINA OCCUR AT NIGHT. BEFORE GOING TO BED…CHECK LOCAL RADIO OR TELEVISION FOR THE LATEST WEATHER INFORMATION. HAVING A NOAA WEATHER RADIO READY TO ALERT YOU TO WARNINGS AT NIGHT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE.
