Winter Storms & Freezes

Winter Storms & Freezes

Feb 14, 2010

winter weatherGenerally, winter storms in Forsyth County are caused by weather systems originating in the Gulf of Mexico and colliding with cold Arctic air that descends south into North Carolina from Canada.

Winter storms can paralyze a community by shutting down normal day-to-day operations by producing an accumulation of snow and ice on trees and utility lines resulting in loss of electricity and blocked transportation routes. Frequently, especially in rural areas, loss of electric power means loss of heat for residential customers, which poses an immediate threat to human life.

Although severe winter storms are somewhat temporary in nature, Forsyth County residents and businesses should be prepared for these seasonal events.  Prior preparation measures can go a long way toward staying warm and comfortable during these frigid storms that can occur multiple times over a Winter season.
